Basil the bunny was surrendered to the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League, D.C.’s municipal shelter, a few months back. Sadly, no one in the house that she was living in was taking care of her.
A woman named Amelia Perez was introduced to the joy and excitement of owning a small animal when she got her beloved guinea pig, Chester. She was heartbroken when Chester passed away last year from kidney stones. She knew she needed to fill this void that she now had with Chester gone, so she contacted her local shelter to ask about their small animals.
That is when she met Basil. She fell in love with her and decided to adopt her without hesitation. At first, Basil was timid, not used to being held, but it didn’t take her long to warm up. Since Basil didn’t run around much indoors, Perez thought she would enjoy being outside on a harness and leash.
She gave it a try. “The first time I put her outside she just sat there, her ears were going in all sorts of directions so I could tell she was listening to everything around her,” Perez told The Dodo. “It took her about 10 minutes to get the idea to start hopping, but once she did she ran up my street.”
Basil enjoys being outside so much, that she and Perez take walks around the neighborhood daily. People stop immediately when they see Basil and come over to pet her. Basil loves all of the attention and is no longer afraid of human interaction.
Since Basil loves the outdoors, Perez took her along with her on a family vacation to the Delaware shore. Saying that Basil enjoyed the beach is an understatement. Her new favorite activity became digging holes in the sand.
“The excitement of digging holes was overwhelming almost,” Perez told The Dodo. “Basil would run in one direction, dig a hole, run again, dig another hole, and the cycle kept on going until she found a place where she thought it was appropriate to dig her final hole to lie down in.”
Perez plans to visit the shore again next summer, and I’m sure Basil cannot wait! In the meantime, she will be enjoying lots of strolls around the neighborhood and plenty of cuddles from her human!
