Dopey, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, is not just a best friend to 12-year-old Britton Voss, he has been his guardian since 2013.
Britton was born with a rare form of epilepsy and is developmentally delayed. His service dog Dopey offers an alert, panting and nudging the teacher or one of Britton’s parents to warn them before Britton is going to have a seizure.
Dopey also helps out the other kids in Britton’s special needs class, and can detect when they are about to have seizures as well. He also offers comfort to kids who are having a hard day.
After they picked Dopey up from Noel’s Dogs Four Hope in Colorado Springs, he and Britton instantly got along. Over the years, the two have formed an unbreakable bond. They are inseparable, and Dopey even sleeps next to Britton in bed every night.
Britton cannot speak, and uses pictures on a computer tablet to communicate, but Dopey helps him be more social and relaxed. Dopey is another pair of eyes on Britton, so that his parents don’t have to worry about him 24/7.
