In mid-July, Elmo the Pit bull was discovered abandoned in a yard with another dog. They think a neighbor noticed the dogs and alerted Animal Control to help them. The dogs were then brought to KC Pet Project in Kansas City. They took Elmo’s picture when he first arrived, in which he looks scared and miserable.
Luckily, the dog Elmo arrived at the shelter with was adopted in August, but Elmo still hadn’t found a home. When he’s at the shelter, he is unhappy and definitely not himself. So they thought it would be a good idea to take him out for a day to enjoy the outside world. When you see Elmo during this excursion, he looks like a whole new dog! That smile on his face says it all!
His outing was part of KC Pet Project’s “furlough” program, which gives shelter dogs the chance to enjoy life outside the shelter for a day or two. He got to enjoy the sun at the park where he also met some new friends; he walked around town and got to see some of the historical sites; he even got to visit a local hair salon, where he was all smiles!
But best of all? A couple read about Elmo’s day out online and drove five hours to meet him! They loved him so much that they decided to adopt him! Now Elmo will flash that big smile for the rest of his life!
