Gracie, a ten-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, was sadly diagnosed with lymphoma, and despite treatments, she only has a few months left to live.
But instead of moping around and dwelling in the sadness, her family wanted to do something special for her. They wanted to celebrate her decade on Earth, so they decided to throw her a party to let her know how loved she is.
“We wanted to have a party for her while she’s not in pain and while she can enjoy it, and she is because she’s getting more dog treats. She’s happy,” Charlene Mahner, Gracie’s owner, told wwl tv. “I want to remember her as happy and not in pain.”
The Mahner family, neighbors and friends – human and dog – all came together to join in on the celebration of Gracie’s wonderful life.
Gracie’s party was filled with balloons and banners, presents, cakes, and of course lots of dog treats!
Many guests even donated to organizations that help shelter animals find loving homes. Gracie’s family encourages others to make donations on Gracie’s behalf to the Louisiana SPCA or the Golden Retriever Rescue.
“People always think when it comes to end of life that it has to be a sad time, but if you know you’ve given them the best life that you can give them, it’s something celebrate,” family friend Judy Wolf told wwl tv. “So yes, people as well as dogs, I think it’s a good example to follow.”
Gracie touched so many people in her ten years on Earth, and her family is very thankful to have had her by their side for so long. Watch her celebration in the video below:
