Braille the kitten has been through some pretty tough times, but this tough cat isn’t letting anything get in the way of starting a brand new life. Last month, Braille was found abandoned and extremely ill. At just a few weeks old, the kitten was suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection. The infection had gotten so bad that her eyes were crusted over and bulging out of the sockets.
Sara Konnecke found the animal and refused to give up on the tiny kitten. With the help of her girlfriend, the pair worked around the clock to help Braille get the care she needed. Konnecke says the animal needed serious medical attention.
“Her condition required us to put hot compresses, saline solution and tobramycin drops in her eyes every four hours, in addition to giving amoxicillin orally twice a day,” Konnecke explained. “It was painful and difficult for her to eat and breathe, and she was permanently shaky the first three or four days of care.”
There were times that the women didn’t think Braille would make it, but they refused to give up. Even when the kitten had to undergo a bilateral enucleation surgery to remove both eyes, the women remained optimistic. They had fallen in love with the small animal.
“We took her back home and she purred for the first time ever once she was taken out of her crate,” Signor said. “It was almost as if we had brought home a new kitten! She has been improving and trying new things every day since.”
Konnecke says Braille is adapting to her new life and has grown into a happy and loving animal. After the kitten received the proper care when she was younger, the veterinarian believes she can go on to live a normal, healthy life.
“Since all of her conditions have been addressed so early on, she will most likely just be a regular, healthy, blind cat!” Konnecke told HuffPost. “Once she is spayed and has fully recovered in a few months, she will technically be up for adoption but we fully intend on never letting her go,” the proud owner said. “She’s ours—for sure!”
