Nova, a pregnant mare, was up for auction and meant to be sent down to Mexico for processing. Thankfully, Vet Ranch’s Dr. Karri was able to step in. She and her team went down to the auction site and (with the help of donations) were able to purchase Nova and bring her and her unborn colt to safety.
When they arrived at the veterinarian facility that Dr. Karri works out of, they discovered that Nova was malnourished, had a lot of parasites and worms, and also had a respiratory infection. It was also discovered that Nova could go into labor any day! Before that happened, Dr. Karri wanted to give Nova as much treatment as possible so that she would be healthy when delivering her colt.
Nova was de-wormed and treated to a few rounds of antibiotics in hopes to clear up her respiratory infection. And in just the span of 2 weeks, Nova was given a clean bill of health! It turned out to be just in the nick of time! A few hours after Dr. Karri announced that Nova was 100% healthy, Nova gave birth to her colt, Orion, without any help from doctors. I can only imagine Dr. Karri’s shock when she went to check on Nova that afternoon. Instead of finding one horse, she found two!
The mother and son duo were deemed healthy and are doing great. The only thing that they need now is to find their forever home! In the meantime, Nova and Orion will continue to enjoy running around with the other animals at Vet Ranch!
